Reddit Bans Hate Speech In Act Against 'The Donald' Subreddit

On Monday, June 29, Reddit finally decided to ban hate speech after a yearlong debate. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announced that ‘The Donald’, home to 790,000 subscribers, has failed to “meet our most basic expectations.”

Reddit is known as one of the largest social networking and message board websites. The community or “subreddit,” called “The_Donald,” is known to share videos and messages in support of Donald Trump. Reddit executives said the group had consistently broken its rules by allowing people to target and harass others with hate speech.

“Reddit is a place for community and belonging, not for attacking people,” said Steve Huffman, the company’s chief executive. ‘‘The_Donald’ has been in violation of that.”

As part of a crackdown on hate speech, Reddit is also banning roughly 2,000 other political communities. Twitch, a video-game broadcasting and viewing platform, shared a few examples of "offending content" from Trump's account, including a campaign rally in 2016 and a recent campaign event in Tulsa, Oklahoma, both of which showed the president making racist comments about Mexican Americans.

Yeah...What She Says. Bobbi Brown Breaks Success Down In Plain Terms

Bobbi Brown Breaks It Down...It's Simple

Happy New Year!
Entrepreneur Magazine's Editor in Chief, Jason Feifer, interviews celebrities all of the time for their entrepreneurial side. He also talks to thousands of entrepreneurs a year through his job as editor of the magazine, speaker at events, and podcast host. This simple interview he had with cosmetics industry mega-star, Bobbi Brown, really hit home this holiday season, when you're evaluating how to move forward, and what to move forward.
Bobbi Brown, for those who don't know, started as a makeup artist. "I just wanted to make something that was better than what was on the market," she told Jason in this interview with him in the September 2019 issue of the magazine. The only advice she tells Jason that she got, was this: "The world doesn't need another cosmetics company. You don't know what you're doing."

Stop Right There...I Got To Know Right Now...

Have you heard this before from someone who loves you? Or from someone you barely know? Have you told yourself this?

Bobbi Brown's Top 5 Highlights

Everyone has their doubters, and their rules. Rules of how they think something should be done. Just remember to keep the faith and trust yourself in how something can work. Here are 5 highlights from Jason's interview with Bobbi that hopefully hit home with you:

HEAD DOWN
"OK, go home and just do it. Put your head down, figure out what it takes, and just do it. And if it doesn't work, then do it, but do it a little bit differently."

HEAD DOWN - BUT GET UP
This one is a funny contradiction, but you'll get the point: "Stop putting your head down in your computer. At least once a day, raise your head, get some fresh air, and talk to people."

ENTREPRENEURS LOVE MAKING THINGS
"You know, you just make this up. An entrepreneur really is just someone who makes things up and likes to get them done."

FAILURE
"I'm not afraid of failure. If something doesn't work out, I look at it and say, 'OK. That was fun. That was interesting. This is why it didn't work.' Because I always like to learn from it."

CONFIDENCE
The only thing confidence is, is being comfortable in your skin. I'm comfortable to make mistakes. I'm comfortable to admit what I don't know. I just think it's interesting not knowing things, so long as you're not afraid to ask questions and say, 'Wait; what do you mean?'"

Hiiiiiiii!!!!!!! Happy New Year 2020!

Hello Tin Shinglers!

It’s been so long! Two weeks, yet over the course of the holiday season, seems like, well, an entire season!

Two Tips

This video is a connection point with you, and includes 2 tips for you for how to get media this year:

  • Pitch A Lot. More than you think. You need to stop thinking about it, and just DO IT. You can strategize it, grow it, stretch it in all kinds of directions on why you would pitch a particular media. But you need to just block out all of the other ideas, and do it to the one idea you cooked up! Record your other ideas in your Content Planner or your PR Planner and Tracker (both are Tin Shingle Templates you can download).

  • Pitch Different. If you’re going to be pitching a lot, you need new ideas. You need unique story angles. If you don’t know what I mean, then join Tin Shingle right now, and set your Wednesdays at 12pm EST for a PR Challenge Session, where we can talk face to face. In the meantime, I’ll explain: there is a magical intersection between really good idea - a must-write-about-idea - and timeliness. That is how pure editorial happens. Editorial that you don’t pay for. But that a magazine or TV show actually paid to have produced. They paid their writers, graphic designers, photographers, videographers, producers, editors, to produce this great story. And it mentions or totally features your business. This isn’t something you deserve. It isn’t something that must be done for you. It isn’t why the media exists. To write about you for free. This magical intersection I speak of is the WHY the media exists, to inform their readers, to entertain their viewers, to reward you with the press you do deserve. You must think of what is that tiny, unique snowflake of an article idea that will tempt them.

Sure, you can pitch in a general pitch. A “hey, this is what my business does” type pitch. And you may have invented something totally different, and that in and of itself is a strong enough pitch. That does happen all of the time. But for every other produced story out there, it’s the magical intersection you must tap into.

I know you can do it!

Stick with Tin Shingle. Ideas come from here, and that’s more than half the battle. Media contacts are helpful, sure. But unique story ideas are golden.

Happy New Year!

Reading Cosmo

Cosmo is filled with mixed messages, but those that are delivered are worth reading - and ignoring the conflicting ones. Was never allowed to read Cosmo when growing up. But right now, it seems useful as a young person to read. Getting familiar with the different sections for Tin Shingle’s business owners, makers and artists who want to use it to get the word out.

Scrolling through Instagram one afternoon, this mega artist, Ashley Longshore, was in the feed, holding up a full page feature on her art in the New York Times. She's a pretty hilarious, intense artist who makes bold and empowering statements in her art. If you need a serious pick-me-up to keep going in your artist or entrepreneurial career, do follow her Instagram feed.

She captured her joy at getting the full page feature in the New York Times here in this post, and her message is one you need to see and remember on your PR journey:

Republished from @ashleylongshoreart Instagram:

ashleylongshoreart I just woke up to a PAGE in the New York TIMES!!!! Im sobbing... absolutely sobbing....... just please know.... above all things.... to keep hope and be optimistic.... believe in yourself..... i am a self taught artist from montgomery alabama. I was an insecure nerd. I grew to love myself when the world felt cold and scary.... please.... do the same for yourself.... love yourself and work hard..... believe in the magic of life... i love you..... i love you so much. This moment is absolutely indescribable... #ashleylongshore #popart #fuckyeah

Take a look at how Ashley is making more out of this PR placements, and all of her recent placements. Once you get that press, lift the best parts of it and call it out to your people. To make a graphic like this, you could use the DIY design tool, PicMonkey to doing some fancy flyer work on your phone, or you could hire your graphic designer to do it for you. Either way, it's a good time and/or money investment as you leverage that press to do more for your brand.
